Effects of Type of Intrauterine Anesthesia on Neurophysiological Assessment of Newborn Babies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: It is proposed in different studies that different types of anesthesia affect the physiological status of the neonate while other studies revealed no change. Aim: To determine and compare the changes in neonatal APGAR score at 1 and 5 minutes according to the type of anesthesia. Study design: It was a comparative study and was conducted in Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Lahore General Hospital, Lahore. Duration of the study was of six months duration. Sample size: The subjects were divided into three equal groups; group A, group B and group C. Each group comprised of 28 patients. Subjects in group A were those who were undergoing spontaneous vaginal delivery, group B was composed of subjects who were undergoing cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia and group C was composed of subjects who were undergoing cesarean delivery under general anesthesia. A strict inclusion and exclusion criterion was followed. Physiological status of the baby was assessed from by measuring APGAR score. Results: The results of this study show significant difference between the study groups. Conclusion: Subjects undergoing SVD and Cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia are associated with significantly better APGAR score at 1 and 5 minutes as compared to Cesarean delivery under general anesthesia.

Introduction: Newborns should be evaluated immediately after birth and the traditional way of assessing is to use the Apgar score. The aim of this study was to estimate the Apgar score and evaluate the first 24 hour- clinical outcome of babies born at Yazd hospitals. Methods: In a descriptive cross-sectional study, Apgar score was assessed for 462 newborns at the 4 centers of Afshar, Madar, Ka...

Background: Hypothermia is the most common complication of general and neuroaxial anesthesia. In previous studies, the effects of anesthesia on the temperature were assessed in different surgeries. In this study we evaluated the effects of general and spinal anesthesia on the core temperature of the mother and neonate in cesarean section. Methods: Eighty pregnant women were randomly assigned t...

Background: Pregnancy induced hypertension is one of the most common causes of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. New born delivered to mothers with hypertension are more liable for intrauterine growth retardation and may be delivered prematurely. We aimed to determine the effect of pregnancy-induced hypertension on complete blood count, gestational age and birth weight of newborn...
متن کاملCurrent pattern of Ponderal Indices of term small-for-gestational age in a population of Nigerian babies
BACKGROUND Small-for-gestational age (SGA) newborns constitute a special group of neonates who may have suffered varying degrees of intrauterine insults and deprivation. Variations in birth weight, length and Ponderal Index (PI) depend on the type and degree of intrauterine insults the babies were exposed to. The objective of the study was to determine the current prevalence of term SGA births ...
